How to Check a Bank Statement for Unfamiliar Charges

Review a bank statement by matching transactions, checking recurring charges, spotting unusual patterns, and contacting the institution through a trusted channel.

Small charges can reveal a larger problem

Read statements regularly instead of waiting for a large unexplained transaction. Match each payment with a receipt, subscription, transfer, or household purchase. Remember that a merchant name on a statement may differ from the brand name you recognize.

Look for repeated charges, unfamiliar locations, duplicate payments, changed amounts, and transactions made while you were away. Pending charges may change or disappear, so distinguish them from completed transactions before reporting an issue.

Act through a known contact route

If a transaction is not yours, use the bank's official app, website, or phone number from a statement or card. Do not call a number supplied in an unexpected message. Ask about freezing the card, replacing it, disputing the charge, and protecting linked accounts.

  • Change compromised passwords from the official service.
  • Check automatic payments after replacing a card.
  • Keep the statement and case reference secure.
  • Review the next statement for related activity.

Write down the merchant name as it appears, the date, amount, and any related receipt before contacting the bank or seller. A familiar company may use a different billing name, while a small repeated charge can be easy to overlook. Regular review gives you a shorter path from a strange charge to a useful response. Keep evidence and avoid sharing complete account details in public messages.
