Map the problem before buying equipment
Slow Wi-Fi can come from a weak signal, a busy network, a poor internet connection, an old device, or an application that needs more bandwidth than the connection can provide. Walk through the rooms at different times and note whether the problem affects every device or only one. Test near the router, then at the place where the connection fails. This simple comparison separates coverage from service problems.
Record the room, time, device, and activity when the issue appears. A video call that breaks only in the evening may point to network demand, while a printer that fails from one room may point to distance or compatibility. Avoid changing five settings at once because you will not know which change helped.
Improve placement and basics
Place the router in a central, open, elevated location when possible. Thick walls, metal cabinets, appliances, mirrors, and large water-filled objects can weaken or reflect radio signals. Keep the equipment cool and give it space. Avoid hiding it behind furniture simply for appearance if that blocks the signal.
Update router firmware through the manufacturer's official interface and replace default administrator credentials. Use current wireless security, a strong network password, and a separate guest network for visitors or devices that do not need access to household files. Check which devices are connected and remove equipment you no longer recognize or use.
Choose the least complicated improvement
Move a fixed computer, television, or game console to Ethernet when practical. A wired connection reduces wireless demand and often improves reliability for a device that does not move. If coverage remains poor, compare a properly designed mesh system with a simple access point. Extenders can help in some homes but may reduce speed or create roaming confusion when placed badly.
Keep network names and passwords understandable to the people who need them, but do not put private details in the name. Label access points and record their location. Follow the provider's requirements before replacing a modem or changing settings that affect telephone or television service.

Keep a note of the router model, provider contact, and important settings so a reset does not leave the household unable to reconnect.
Remember that wireless performance is affected by the device as well as the access point. Older devices may support slower standards, while a new device may be limited by its own antenna or driver. Update device drivers through official sources and test one device at a time. If only one room has trouble, do not replace every piece of equipment before checking that particular device, its power settings, and its distance from the router.
