How to Prepare a Home for a Long Absence

Prepare a home for a long absence by managing water, power, mail, food, security, plants, pets, and a trusted local contact.

Walk through the home before making a list

The right preparation depends on weather, building rules, the length of the absence, pets, plants, appliances, and local security. Walk room by room and look for water sources, perishable food, ventilation needs, windows, lights, and equipment that should not run unattended.

Arrange care for pets, plants, mail, deliveries, and rubbish. Follow the instructions for turning off water, gas, or equipment safely, and ask a qualified person when the system is unfamiliar. Do not create a new risk by unplugging an appliance that protects food, medication, or the building.

Leave a controlled way to check in

Tell a trusted local contact how to reach you and what they are allowed to do. Leave emergency numbers, building information, and the location of shut-off points without sharing unnecessary passwords or private documents. Use timers and security settings that do not reveal that the home is empty.

  • Check smoke alarms and any water-leak sensors.
  • Secure windows, doors, and spare keys.
  • Hold mail or arrange collection.
  • Keep a copy of travel insurance and contact details.

Before leaving, take a final photo of important settings or meter readings when useful. Write down when the local contact will check the home and how they should report a problem. A calm departure comes from a short checklist that protects the home without adding needless complexity.
