Travel phone problems usually begin before the airport
A phone is a map, ticket wallet, translator, camera, payment device, and emergency contact. That makes preparation more important than installing another travel app at the last minute. Start by checking whether your phone is unlocked, supports the local network bands, and can use an eSIM if that is your preferred option.
Compare the total cost of your carrier's roaming plan with a local SIM or travel eSIM. Check activation instructions, data limits, hotspot rules, voice and text support, and whether your number must remain active for two-factor authentication. A cheap data plan is less useful if a critical account sends codes to a number you turned off.
Download what will work offline
Save maps for the destination, reservation details, language resources, transport instructions, and emergency contacts. Test them with mobile data disabled. Keep tickets and identification documents accessible without a network, while protecting sensitive files with your device security.
Back up photos and important information before leaving. Carry a compatible charger and, when allowed, a power bank. Turn on automatic time settings unless you have a reason to set the zone manually, and check that your calendar events display in the local time.
