Export before closing important accounts

Before deleting or leaving an account, check whether it contains data you may need later. This may include photos, videos, contacts, messages, invoices, purchase history, creative work, saved documents, playlists, learning progress, certificates, reviews, posts, or account settings. Once an account is deleted, recovery may be impossible.

Exports are also useful as backups. A social platform, cloud app, note tool, or marketplace may change policies, lock accounts, or remove features. Having your own copy gives you more control.

Prioritize irreplaceable data

Some data is easy to recreate. Some is not. Focus first on personal photos and videos, important conversations, legal or financial documents, creative projects, business records, contacts, and proof of purchases. For professional accounts, export portfolio work, client deliverables, analytics, invoices, and certificates if allowed by policy.

Do not save sensitive data casually just because it is available. Exports may contain private messages, location history, contacts, and hidden metadata. Store them securely and delete what you do not need.

Understand the export format

Data exports often arrive as ZIP files containing HTML, JSON, CSV, images, or folders. Some are easy to browse; others need technical tools to read. Open the export and confirm it contains what you expected before deleting the original account.

• Check that files open correctly.
• Save exports in a clearly named folder.
• Keep a note explaining where the data came from.
• Encrypt or protect exports that contain sensitive information.

Schedule exports for key services

For important services, set a yearly reminder to export data. This is useful for photos, notes, contacts, password manager emergency exports, business records, and creative platforms. If the service offers automatic export or backup integration, review it carefully and test recovery.

For password managers, follow the provider's guidance. Exports can be extremely sensitive because they may contain all your logins. Store them encrypted and only when you have a clear reason.

Keep control without hoarding everything

Personal data downloads are about resilience, not digital hoarding. Save what would be painful to lose, protect what is sensitive, and delete unnecessary exports when they no longer serve a purpose. Your data is more useful when it is portable, understandable, and safely stored.
